I bought this to use with a 3U SGI Rackable SE3016 16 Caddies 3.5" SAS SATA Storage Expander that I bought used on eBay. The Rackable SE3016 came with an SFF-8088 cable. The LSI SAS 9200-8e does NOT come with an SFF-8088 cable. The LSI SAS 9200-8e works perfectly on Ubuntu (14.04 Trusty Tahr, kernel 4.6.0) using module mpt2sas.

If you can connect the drive directly to the LSI 9207 and see if that fixes the issue if not, try a different card or upgrade the cards firmware. was trying to find the manual for that and ran across SGI/Rackable's 81 x 3.5" drive JBOD.
